How It Works
Your board is an audio device, like a speaker. It in fact has speakers on each side, and power and volume buttons on the left. The audio signal is carried to the board from the computer through a USB.
Your board is also an input device, like a mouse. It takes the signal from the pen and sends it from the board to the computer through the same USB. If this connection is in working order, the flame logo in the top left will glow white.
Your board, unless you have some of the newer versions, is not a video device. It’s not really “related” to the projector, and it doesn’t “know” what is showing on it. It’s helpful to think of each function as separate: you can use the pen (with or without ActivInspire) even when the speakers are broken or off, or you can use the speakers even when the projector is broken or off, and so on. You can even use the pen without the picture, which is annoying and useless except as an example right here.
Your board has a two cords: a power cable and a USB. In many rooms, the USB goes through the wall, and is extended by a (usually blue) ethernet cable. The ethernet covers most of the distance, but it doesn’t connect directly to the board or to the computer. That’s what the little gray USB boosters are for.
How It Breaks
The most common problem is when you’re trying to play audio through the speakers, and it’s not happening. Probably the power is off or the computer is set to a different output.
Another problem is the pen needs calibration. The board “knows” you’re touching it, but not exactly where.
Less common problems include
- The power could be unplugged or off.
- The USB connection could be unplugged.
- The pen could wear down from lots of use.
- The computer could be missing the drivers.

How to Fix It
For sound, make sure the speakers are on (red/green button on side). Then check the computer settings: right-click the speaker in the bottom right, go to “Playback devices” and set it as enabled and default.
If the pen needs calibration, hold it over the flame logo and follow the instructions.
If the flame is red, check the power and usb cables.
If the flame is dead, check the power.
If the flame is purple, turn it off and back on again. Actually, do that anyway.
